My Journey to Medicine

My journey towards becoming a doctor began at the age of 13, when the loss of my aunt to breast cancer filled me with fear and a desire to make a difference in healthcare. After attending St. Paul’s College in Windhoek, I was fortunate to receive a scholarship for the International Baccalaureate program in Montezuma, New Mexico, where I immersed myself in a diverse community, embracing different cultures, religions, and orientations.
Continuing my education at the College of Wooster in Ohio, I explored my passions for both fine arts and sciences, earning a degree in Biology and a minor in Studio Art. Following my heart, I moved to North Carolina and pursued a medical degree at Wake Forest University. Initially drawn towards Oncology, I sought experiences in pediatric oncology, surgical oncology, and gynecologic oncology. However, haunting nightmares and a growing interest in HIV management led me to pivot towards Infectious Diseases.
During an eye-opening experience in Namibia, working with AIDS orphans and witnessing the impact of antiretroviral medications, I realized the power of Infectious Disease management. Inspired by the wisdom of Dr. James Peacock during medical school, I embraced the path of Infectious Diseases. After completing my training in New York City, my husband and I moved to Connecticut, where I provided primary care for HIV patients at Cornell Scott Hill Health Center, supporting them as they pursued their dreams despite their diagnosis.
In 2017, we relocated to Arizona for better career opportunities, and I joined Metro Infectious Disease Consultants, engaging in both outpatient HIV care and inpatient consultations. The advent of COVID-19 in 2020 was a profound and challenging experience, as we battled to save lives during the pandemic’s devastating waves. Witnessing the loss of patients and colleagues in the ICU reinforced the value of life’s brevity and brought the medical community together in solidarity.
In July 2022, we made the decision to return to Namibia to be closer to our loved ones. As a result, in July 2023, my husband and I established our private practice, embarking on a new and fulfilling adventure in Africa.
This journey has shaped me as a physician and a person, instilling in me a deep commitment to making a positive impact on people’s lives and providing compassionate care to all those in need. As we embark on this new chapter, I am filled with excitement and dedication to serving our community and striving for excellence in healthcare.
